SOJOURNER TRUTH escaped enslavement with her young daughter in 1826 and went on to become a Women’s Rights Activist. She spoke at the National Women’s Rights convention in 1850 and met with President Lincoln.
HARRIET TUBMAN was an Abolitionist and Political Activist. She escaped enslavement in 1849, going on to liberate other enslaved through the Underground Railroad. She was never caught and never lost a “passenger.” She also served as a scout/spy/nurse in the Union during the Civil War.
MADAM CJ WALKER, born Sarah Breedlove, was an entrepreneur of haircare products and cosmetics. In her mid-30s, she moved to Denver in 1905 and grew her business into millionaire status, becoming the first Black female millionaire/philanthropist.
She was also the first of her family to be born free.
ROSA PARKS is responsible for the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. Although it was over a year later, the boycott led to bus segregation being ruled unconstitutional. Upon speculation that she was “tired” as her reasoning for not giving up her bus seat, she has stated: “No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”
SHIRLEY CHISHOLM was elected to the United States Congress in 1968, becoming the first Black woman in Congress. She served 7 terms in the US House and sought the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1972. She is known for being “unbossed and unbought” in The House, saying: “I want to be a woman ...who dared to be a catalyst of change.”
KAMALA HARRIS is the first female Vice President elect and Vice President of the United States. She is also the first Black woman to serve as US Vice President. She became VP Elect in 2020, and officially becomes Vice President this January, 2021.
